NHS spitfire

I took this photo of the “Thank U NHS” spitfire (PR Mk.XI PL983) as it flew circled the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. I was admittedly lucky with visibility, I took it as I was hanging out of my home office window. The aircraft banked perfectly towards me, showing its distinctive elliptical wing design.

This particular aircraft’s airframe was one of the last variants built with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, before switching to the more powerful Rolls Royce Griffon.

The photo was featured in BBC News “Your pictures of Scotland 11 – 18  September”.
